MERCH CAN BE EXPENSIVE...
The go-to merch for most people is some kind of graphic tee. They're easy to produce, easy to brand and not too expensive compared to other apparel or more custom merch. But even then you're generally still paying at least $30 a tee.
A lot of people see this as an expense they need to recoup. You spend $30 a piece to print these tees so you want to charge at least $35 to $40 to get your money back.
But I think this is the wrong way to approach it.
THERE'S SOMETHING MAGICAL ABOUT GETTING STUFF FOR FREE.
Do you remember a time you received an online order in the mail and when you opened the package there's a little freebie thrown in for you?
Or how about when you're at an event. There's a guy with a t-shirt gun firing a few into the crowd and you manage to catch the one heading straight for you.
Or even just sitting at your local bar and they come round with some free cheese and bread for their customers.
It doesn't take much but the act of giving something away for free creates such a strong positive association between your brand your customers. Everyone loves getting free stuff and I'm willing to bet that you could put a smile on anyone's face if you give them something extra they weren't expecting.
So instead of struggling to sell your t-shirts for $40 try give a few away. Make a customer happy, brighten their day and reinforce their positive experience with your brand. Because those are the customers that will rave about you to their friends and family and ultimately help you grow your business.
